Ground School
Complimentary in-person ground school at John Wayne Airport — where knowledge becomes real-world flying.
At OCFC, attending our complimentary in-person ground school is encouraged for all students. We maintain a standard that exceeds the FAA requirement: a minimum of 85% on all FAA knowledge exams.
Great pilots aren't made by memorizing answers — they're trained by applying and correlating knowledge to every phase of flight. Ground school here goes beyond the FAA Knowledge Test. Every lesson is built to help you apply concepts in real flight scenarios: making weather decisions before and during flights, navigating the complex airspace around a busy commercial airport, and analyzing real accident case studies. The result: students who think like pilots, not test-takers.
Classes are led by certificated flight instructors who actively train pilots, in a real aviation environment at John Wayne Airport. OCFC is also the official Flight Lab for Orange Coast College's aviation program, and every enrolled student receives access to the Cessna online flight training course developed with King Schools.
SCHEDULE. The Private Pilot Ground School is a structured 9-week program: classes meet twice a week, 6:00–8:00 PM, in three progressive stages (Lessons 1–6, 7–11, 12–18) with a stage exam after each and a comprehensive final. 36 hours of instruction in total. Instrument Ground School runs on the same twice-weekly pattern. Dates are subject to change — check with OCFC.
ONSITE TESTING. OCFC is an approved PSI testing center: take your FAA Knowledge Exam on campus, in a familiar environment.
